The Amvrakikos Gulf also known as the Gulf of Arta or the Gulf of Actium located in the Ionian Sea in northwestern Greece. About 40 km (25 miles) long and 15 km (9 miles) wide, it is one of the largest enclosed gulfs in Greece.
The towns of Preveza and Vonitsa lie on its shores. A thriving community of bottlenose dolphins lives in the Amvrakikos Gulf which is part of a larger National Park and also inhabited by loggerhead sea turtles and a rich abundance of birds including rare species.
Fanaria bay lies opposite Ammoudia village which stradles the Acheron river estuary. A traditional, tranquil fishing village Ammoudia offers good fish tavernas, restaurants and cafes, lovely beaches and an excellent river boat trip to ancient Nikopolis and the oracle of the dead. Along the harbour locals and visitors usually spend the evenings watching the wonderful Ionian sunsets and the panoramic views of the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos.
Explore the uninhabited group of islands and islets scattered down the western coast of Greece called the Dragonera Islands (or Nisis Dhragonera) and Echinades. Whilst there are very few safe anchorages in the islands there are several down the adjacent mainland coast.
Ligia (Lygia or Liggia) is a small and relaxing rock bound sheltered fishing harbour with a number of facilities ashore, a nice harbourside taverna and cafe plus more choice of shops and tavernas in the nearby hill top village. There's a lovely long unspoilt beach close to the harbour too.
The entrance to Ligia harbour is a bit tricky and the approach should only be made in calm weather with a member of the crew on the bow conning the way in.
Erikousa (or Erikoussa, Erikusa, Ereikoussa) is one of a group of three small islands off the coast of Corfu called The Diapontian Islands which translates to The Faraway Islands (the other two are Othoni and Mathraki). Nisos Erikousa is rich in green forests, filled with cypress, and olive trees with a small local population who enjoy a quiet, tranquil way of life. Anchor at Erikoussa island for its crystal clear waters, the endless sandy beach of Faro or Fiki and for a haven of peace and afterwards maybe sail along the remarkable cliffs of Sidari.
Port Atheni on the NE of Meganissi (or Meganisi) is a large quiet beautiful bay surrounded by olive trees. Despite being a popular bay for visiting yachts to drop anchor, particularly during the day it is never crowded. With crystal clear waters on the west side of the cove Port Atheni is a great place for a swim and a snorkel.
A 30 minute walk takes you to the traditional Ionian village of Katomeri which offers a taste of 'real Greece' where you can buy fresh bread and provisions. Island Sailing provide a dinghy & outboard with every yacht charter in Greece.
Kefalonia Island International Airport (airport code EFL or LGKF) is the airport on Kefalonia Island, Greece and is 9 Km west of Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia Island, the largest of the Ionian islands in western Greece.
You can fly into Kefalonia, Argostoli airport direct from a number of UK airports with charter airlines including Easyjet, Monarch Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways.
Corfu International Airport, or Ioannis Kapodistrias (Capodistrias) International Airport (CFU or LGKR) is the airport on the Greek island of Corfu (Kerkyra) serving both scheduled and charter flights from European cities.
The village of Petriti is a small traditional fishing harbour on the east coast of Corfu (or Kerkyra) and a stop for a meal of freshly caught fish is highly recommended.
Benitsesis is an idyllic stop-off and former fishing village set amidst wooded hills on the east coast
