Price & Pre course requirements

The price for the RYA Day Skipper theory course is £295. There are no pre-course requirements for the course but some sailing knowledge and experience such as the RYA practical competent crew course or some dinghy sailing is helpful.

What's Included: Online theory course, RYA pack containing practice charts, the RYA Chart Plotter Simulator, RYA Day Skipper course notes, RYA practice Almanac and RYA Day Skipper question paper, assessment and certificate. You also have an Island Sailing RYA Yachtmaster Instructor to help you if needed.

We also provide a FREE Bretton/Portland type plotter and a pair of dividers with every Day Skipper course both of which are essential to complete the course. The assessment and completion certificate is all included in the price so all you need is a 2b pencil, a rubber and pencil sharpener!

The RYA Day Skipper theory course is absolutely full of fantastic information from tying a knot, tidal heights, tidal streams, weather, position fixing, estimated position to plotting a full blown course to steer and passage plan. The courses are full of animated graphics that take you step by step through every lesson. You also have the opportunity to gain your RYA Day Skipper theory certificate with distinction.

The course is made up of detailed lessons, most of which are animated for easy learning. Each lesson is followed by a set of questions which can be answered online. Some of the answers will be checked by the software before being submitted to us. The software will pick up any errors and provide advice on what has gone wrong allowing you a second chance to do the question and submit the answer. Once an answer is submitted the feedback is instant in the form of a detailed answer page. The course provides:

  • Online assessment that can be taken in your own home
  • Instant feedback on your submitted answers followed by personal feedback from your RYA instructor

Reasons to take the Day Skipper theory course
  • To charter a yacht either bareboat or in a flotilla in the Ionian waters of Greece the skipper is required by Greek law to hold RYA Day Skipper Practical Sailing Course or above or, International Certificate of Competence for Sail (ICC), or an equivalent national qualification/certificate.
  • Once you have completed the theory course you will be safer for yourself, your friends and your family and after completing an RYA practical course you should be well on your way to being a first class skipper!
  • Completing your Day Skipper (theory and practical) automatically entitles you to apply for the ICC (International Certificate of Competence)*. This qualification is required by most European countries to validate your competence to charter a boat.
  • If you want to progress through the RYA cruising scheme to eventually attain Yachtmaster or sailing instructor it is important to complete this course as the RYA recommend that theory is required if a student is going to complete the practical course properly. To take the Coastal Yachtmaster theory course you will need the required pre-course knowledge of Day Skipper theory.

*The RYA is permitted to issue the ICC to British nationals and residents over 16 years of age as well as to the nationals of non-UNECE countries and nationals of the USA and Canada.  Special arrangements are in place for applications from Australia through Yachting Australia and New Zealand through the New Zealand Coastguard Boating Education Service.
