Pre-charter Information & FAQ's BVI

Please complete the crew list below as soon as possible as this will avoid delays in processing your yacht papers which could in turn delay you setting sail.

If you have booked a skipper please ignore the skipper sections of the form but allocate one of your party who is over 18 as ‘First Mate’.

We hope you have a wonderful time exploring the British Virgin Islands - Happy Sailing!

TRANSFERS TO SCRUB ISLAND YACHT BASE

To get to the Dream Yacht Charter Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina base - Fly direct to the BVIs via Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS), Beef Island, Tortola. On arrival, it’s just a short walk or two-minute taxi ride to the Trellis Bay ferry dock where you can catch the regular Scrub Island ferry to the base, which takes ten minutes. The ferry is free of charge for all Dream / Island Sailing customers and runs from Trellis Bay between 6:45am to 10:30pm and from Scrub Island between 6:30am and 10:15pm.

Customers coming from St. Thomas, Charlotte Amalie, can get the ferry to Tortola and take a 45-minute taxi ride from Road Town Ferry Dock to Trellis Bay to pick up the Scrub Island ferry. Make sure your passport is in date and valid for the duration of your stay.

You can reach Scrub Island with a free shuttle transfer from Trellis Bay Ferry Dock. The dock is a short walk from the airport terminal, but we recommend booking a taxi for the two-minute journey (about 9 USD per person). You can pick up a taxi in front of the airport.

The free shuttle service to Scrub Island operates at 45 minutes past the hour between 06:30 until 22:45 from the Trellis Bay Ferry Dock. It runs at 30 minutes past the hour from Scrub Island. The journey takes 10 minutes. Additional complimentary or private shuttles can be organised/booked, please contact us for advice.

ACCESS BY FERRY FROM THE USVI
You can book a private ferry from Charlotte Amalie to Scrub Island with Dolphin Water Taxi and Ferry. They will also help you with your custom documentation in Road Town where you will not have to get off the ferry.  You can book one of the many ferries from the US Virgin Islands to Road Town, Tortola. We recommend you book a taxi to take you from Road Town to Trellis Bay (around 45 minutes and 18 USD per person) to pick up the shuttle to Scrub Island. If you need help with your taxi transfer, please contact us. Taxis are also available in front of the ferry dock.
Information subject to change without notice.

MANDATORY THINGS TO BRING, REGULATIONS & CUSTOMS

Unless you have booked a skipper it is advised to bring the original copy(s) of your sailing qualifications/skipper's licence.

A VISA or MASTERCARD Credit Card for your yacht security deposit (Debit Cards and American Express are NOT accepted). Please make sure you have a large enough limit to cover the deposit for the yacht you have booked. If you do not possess a VISA or MASTERCARD credit card you must inform us BEFORE you travel to the BVI's as your charter can't commence without the completed credit card security deposit.

At least one mobile phone set up for roaming in the BVI's and charger – it is very important that you can keep in contact.

Night sailing is not allowed without authorisation of the base manager. A cruising permit and National Marine Park permit are mandatory and you will need to pay for them at our base. Mooring buoys from the National Park are for daily use only.

CUSTOMS CLEARANCE
When you leave or return to the British Virgin Islands by private or charter boat, customs and immigration, clearance at your entry port is mandatory. There are customs offices for clearing in and out at Road Town and West End on Tortola, Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda, and Jost Van Dyke.

For those who want to visit US Virgin Islands, they must be advised that an American visa is mandatory. You must take the necessary registration steps on the Internet if you are part of the eligible countries. Passports must be biometrical. The web site is www.esta.org/

Tipping is standard and expected in all restaurants/bars and for other services undertaken during your charter. The rule of thumb is generally 10-15% of the amount charged. Some establishments automatically add this to the bill.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Travel light is our advice. Don’t forget your passport(s).

Please bring your luggage in a soft bag that will fold down without wheels or hard edges. Space on a yacht is limited and cases with hard edges and wheels will often damage the woodwork on the boat. There is a limited amount of space available for luggage storage on the check-in and check-out day only.

Bedding and yacht towels are provided on your yacht. If you have a late flight home we recommend bringing another towel if you wish as yacht towels cannot be kept after you disembark on the last day.

All yachts are equipped with sufficient numbers of life jackets, usually of a standard size. If you are not a standard size, or especially for small children it is wise to bring your own life jackets . If you would like to check about this before you travel to the BVI's please get in touch.
