A little bit of Ionian history…Between 1815 and 1864 Britain was the protective power over the United States of the Ionian Islands. The British statesman William Gladstone recommended handing over the islands to Greece, after a detailed tour in 1863. Britain together with France and Russia signed on June 5 1863, in London, the Treaty according to which Britain gave up its role as the power protecting the Ionian Islands. On May 21st 1864 the unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece became official and the rule and protectorate of the Islands was passed by Britain to the newly enthroned Greek King, George I.
